Chasing the Sun – The Breathtaking Sunrises and Sunsets of Vancouver, BC

British Columbia has natural beauty around every corner.  Whether it is the mountains, the rainforests or the variety of cultures; we are blessed with so much.  Watching the sun rise and fall over our rich landscapes is an amazing experience.

The average Canadian lives to be 81 years old.  That translates to 29,565 opportunities to stop everything you are doing, relax, take a deep breath and watch one of the most amazing visuals that we often take for granted.

The following photographs give a glimpse into eyes of the Vancouver based photographers who search high and low for the perfect opportunity to chase the sun.

Sunrise from Seymour Mountain

At 4am, a group of us headed over to Mount Seymour Ski resort in North Vancouver where we planned to shoot the sunrise from the top of the mountain.  The experience was amazing and we will definitely be up there again to chase sunrise.

The Sunset Captured from English Bay

This outstanding sunset was captured by Michael Séan aka Tattood Guy Photography.  This photo was taken from English Bay. English Bay is located in the West End of Vancouver and it the most popular beach for sunbathing and experiencing breathtaking sun sets.

Terra Nova, Richmond

Metro Vancouver has no shortage of places to watch the sunset.  Another great spot to watch the sun go down is Terra Nova, in Richmond.  Richmond is a short drive from Vancouver and it’s Richmond Oval was home to the Olympic speed skating in the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Watching the sunset at night seldemly disappoints, but getting up first thing in the morning  to get that perfect picture is something you have to experience.  This sunrise was taken by Tattooed guy Photography from English Bay looking towards North Vancouver.

At Whytecliff Park Overlooking the Water

This beautiful sunset was taken at Whytecliff Park in West Vancouver.  The park is located fairly close to Horseshoe bay and is a quick drive from the Horseshoe Bay Ferry terminal.  The park isn’t just amazing for the water and the sunsets, it is also home to more than 200 species of marine animal life and is the first Marine Protected Area in Canada.

Fallstreak Hole in Richmond

“I chose the right morning to get out to capture the sunrise and got some fantastic extra on Feb 22, 2015 in Richmond, BC. I watched while this formation morphed over the next 10-15 minutes, wow, I’ve never seen anything like it. And yes the colors really were that vivid. “What you’re seeing is called a “fallstreak” hole, an elongated version of a “hole punch cloud.” It looks like something ranging from surreal to creepy but it’s just a very simple process of atmospheric physics.”

Water Front Park, North Vancouver

This photo was taken at one of North Vancouver’s amazing open community spaces, Waterfront Park.  Take a ride on the SeaBus and get off at the Terminal at Lonsdale Quay; Walk west towards the park where you will be treated to some interesting art.  As the sun sets take a seat  on one of the many benches overlooking the water.

Iona Beach Regional Park, Richmond

This photo was taken at Iona Beach Regional Park, Richmond.  The beach is located within Iona Island Regional park. While the area used to be an island it is now a peninsula that is connected by a manmade causeway.  The island is home to a Sewage plant in the middle of the island, but don’t let that steer you away; it is also home to this wonderful beach and an animal refuge.
