Surrey is one of the fastest growing cities in our province, adding about 800 residents monthly. With six distinct communities contained within city limits, it would be impossible to describe the it in certain terms. However, we can confidently say that its diverse social fabric is cornerstone to its allure. There’s no debating the vibrancy of this swelling community. It’s evidenced by a rich arts community, dynamic performing arts scene and a swelling calendar of events. It seems there is always cause for celebration in Surrey, and who wouldn’t want to live in the throes of a festive community? In our Chasing the Sun series we always aim to capture a community in her best light (quite literally). Not only do I think we’ve managed to showcase Surrey’s natural beauty, but the photographers and residents I reached out to were incredibly enthusiastic about participating in the project. It’s that exact enthusiasm that makes Surrey such an extraordinarily welcoming city.
Sunset From Golden Ears
Photographer’s notes: This photo was taken in March of 2015 from the Golden Ears Bridge pedestrian walkway. The long walk to the middle of the bridge was well worth it. Looking west toward the Port Mann Bridge the evening sky was ablaze with colour.

Photographer’s notes: Sunset from the shore of Crescent Beach. It has always has been one of my favourite places to take photos in the summer. I used a 10 stop neutral-density filter and was able to take some awesome long exposures!

Serpentine Fen Sunset
Photographer’s notes: This sunset image was taken in the fall of 2013 at Serpentine Fen Nature Reserve. I was out for an evening stroll and waited for the sun to set. The colours were spectacular, so I got down in the grass and took this shot through the grass.

Crescent Beach Pier Sunset
Photographer’s notes: My wife and I walk the paths and sands of Crescent Beach regularly. With its dramatic skies and sunsets, and its array of wildlife, there is inspiration wherever you look. This was taken back in June 2015 by the pier near Wickson Road. This truly is Surrey at its best.

Photographer’s notes: Taken at 6:30 am Sept 21, 2014 from 152nd Street and Link Road to Colebrook Road in Surrey BC. Just at the south end on the new 152nd Street overpass over Colebrook Road and the railway tracks. Another beautiful sunrise seen on my way to work. I really loved how the orange glow lit up the clouds and the fog for a more mysterious look. I love the fog in the mid ground, the trees in silhouette, the interesting clouds and the mountains in the background. Everything is waiting for the sun to make an appearance. Mount Baker Sunrise
Photographer’s notes: Mount Baker sunrise shot in November 2014. Everyday I arrive at my workplace in the morning to see a different look to the mountain. I finally decided one morning to bring my camera to capture this magnificent view.

Surrey Lake Sunrise
Photographer’s notes: This sunrise (silhouette) image was taken at Surrey Lake, in the winter of 2014. Although it was a chilly morning, I still decided to go on my morning walk. This trail is right off the parking lot. The frost is an added bonus to the image.

Charged Towers Silhouette at Sunset
Photographer’s notes: This sunset was captured on an evening stroll in Serpentine Fen Nature Reserve. The trail winds through the park, marked by three wooden lookout towers. The area is a birdwatcher’s paradise. The length of the trail is 3.5 km, making it a nice way to spend an hour or two. To access the trailhead park simly park in the gravel lot at King George Boulevard and just north of 44th Avenue.

Crescent Beach Pier Sunset
Photographer’s notes: The west-facing Crescent Beach is one of the most opportune vantage points for catching a romantic sunset. We love this beach for the quality of the sand; it invites you to kick off your shoes and trace along its surf. The best beach access is found at the end of Beecher Street, Sullivan Street and Target Street.

Serpentine Fen Sunrise
Photographer’s notes: Taken at 6:45 am Sept 10, 2014 at the Serpentine Fen Bridge on King George Boulevard, in Surrey BC. As I was driving to work I saw a beautiful sunrise so I stopped and set up on the bridge walkway. Then I turned around, faced west and saw these colours in the clouds. Much more beautiful than the actual sunrise. GPS 49° 5.1941′ N 122° 49.1331′ W

Photographer’s notes: Taken at 6:45 am Sept 4, 2014 at the railway tracks on 160th Street and Colebrook Road in Surrey. There was a fair amount of ground fog in this area as I took my usual short cut along 160th Street to Colebrook Road. The sun was just coming over the trees along the tracks and I just had to stop. The parts I like are the ribbon of light on the rails and the mist in the trees. GPS 49° 5.9066′ N 122° 48.0278′ W
