BC Photo Challenge Pro Tips: Capturing Mist Or Smoke In The Trees

On a grey, foggy day, don’t put your camera away! Keep it out and capture the mystery. Photographer Steven Jones will give you the tips you need!

Be sure to enter your photos of Beautiful British Columbia in BC Magazine’s Photo Challenge! There are four categories – nature, adventure, scenic and culture.

On photographing mist or smoke in the trees: “Photos are a two-dimensional medium, but mist or smoke can be used to convey depth. This type of photo is a great project for an otherwise grey day, when poor visibility and bland lighting might tempt you to put your camera away. These photos can be taken from within forests or looking toward forested slopes. I recommend using the bracketing feature on your camera to try shooting at a few different exposure levels in these conditions, as it’s often hard to know what will work best and the automatic setting may not choose the ideal levels.”
